Training presents orientation to principles of MI, and practical exercises to strengthen empathy skills, recognize client change talk, and roll with discord/resistance; client assessment feedback in MI is explained. Participants will be able to: describe four aspects of motivational interviewing; explain the difference between MI and client-centered; recognize the ability to respond to clients with empathic reflective statements; identify change talk within a person’s speech; generate empathic reflections and open questions designed to elicit change talk; and provide an effective, empathic summary statement.
